The SPCA of Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke Counties is just one of the many valuable local programs that have been forced to change their business model and reduce expenses.

Normally, the SPCA of Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke Counties relies on the SPCA Thrift Shop for funding. While the agency hosts several large fundraisers, and has a secure donor base and good grant support, the thrift shop is the major source of funding for the animal shelter. ALL of the profits generated through the 10,000 square foot facility go to help the homeless animals at the shelter. Prior to the outbreak, the SPCA thrift shop was having a record year and generated over $1,000 per day. Due to the regulations and guidelines set forth by the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control, and the Governor of Virginia, the thrift shop had to adjust. Originally, with light restrictions, they tried a 'shop by appointment' model and on-line sales. However, these changes did not generate enough funds to keep the lights and electricity running.

At the same time, the adoption center, which also generates much needed funds, had to close and move to an 'adoption by appointment' model. This has resulted in only 1/2 of the adoptions the agency normally celebrates and 1/2 of the program income.

We know that our story is not unique and in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis, non-profits and small businesses around the country are struggling to sustain programs and services. These are services and programs that communities across the country have come to rely upon. We know individuals and families are also struggling during this unprecedented time of financial uncertainty.

That's why the SPCA of Winchester, Frederick, and Clarke Counties is asking you to donate just $1.00, one time, to help us through this crisis so we can continue to do the work we love and safeguard animals in transition.
